The Theyyam season

തെയ്യക്കാലം

Theyyam is the living ritual art of North Malabar. Through hours of face painting, towering headdresses and costumes of tender coconut fronds, the performer becomes the deity, dancing in sacred groves, temples and ancestral tharavadus through the night to the beat of the chenda. The season opens in the Malayalam month of Thulam and runs until Edavam, roughly October to May.

Before you go

  • Dates follow local temple and tharavadu customs and can change. Confirm locally before you travel.
  • Most performances run late into the night and through dawn, so plan transport back.
  • Dress modestly, remove footwear where asked, and keep clear of the performers and fire.
  • Ask before photographing at close range, and never use flash in a Theyyam's face.

A journey of art, culture and food.
